Business as the Moderator of Civil Discourse on Religion — Re-assessing the role of religion in the public square now includes discussion of and in the workplace. Here is a case study briefly presented in The Economist that considers situations in the UK and in the U.S. “What is striking about the latest judgment is not so much the conclusion (which was a simple exercise of common sense) as the reasoning, tone and context. And even though the judgment came down on the side of the [employer], it did not question the generally emerging consensus that employers must accommodate the religious needs of their staff quite generously, in respect of things like dress, food and time off.”
